South Gloucestershire catering services have been keen to hear feedback from parents/carers and children about the food provision at Olveston School. Key stage 1 children currently receive free fruit at playtimes as part of a Government initiative. We will be offering a bowl of mixed fruit for 15p and/or a cup of milk for 10p every day at play-times for both Key stages 1 & 2. If you child would like to take up this offer, they may bring in fruit tuck money daily.  As the summer months approach, we would like to introduce a ploughman’s salad option for school dinners. This will include: a bread roll, mixed salad, coleslaw (and a choice of ham, egg, tuna, salmon, cheese - 2 choices available each day) with a dessert option at a cost of £1.50. The children taking up this option will be able to join the sandwiches when we dine outside in the fine weather. To be able to introduce this, we need to first gauge interest in the scheme. If you would be interested in this option, please see Mrs Slaytor in the office.
Dinner money will only be accepted on on MONDAY MORNING. Any money sent in during the week will be returned, due to South Glos banking system.
SUMMER LUNCHES, FRUIT TUCK & DINNER MONEY
(UPDATED 6.5.08)
On Saturday 10th May at 10am, we will be adding a splash of colour to our Reception outdoor play area. We would like to invite parents/carers and children to join us for this fun event! Coffee and cakes will be on offer and by joining together, we can make this area a much brighter place. If you are able to help, please see Mrs Slaytor at the office.
Have you noticed five large metal poles in the Reception play area? These strong structures will hold three brightly coloured shade sails that will be installed in a few weeks time. We have had a great response from parents/carers to join us on Sat 10th May to add a splash of colour to the Reception play area fence.
A SPLASH OF COLOUR

(ADDED 4.4.08)
In terms 5 and 6, Year 5 have the opportunity to take part in the Level II Bikeability Training. It is designed to increase the child’s awareness and safety when riding on the roads and is predominantly road based and run by Nationally Accredited Cycle Instructors.  Particular emphasis is on safety – the importance of looking behind and giving the correct signals before changing direction or road position, and the importance of "being seen". The training will take place on Orchard Rise and Bramley Close.
TRIP TO CAERLEON. WRITTEN BY OLIVER M & JOSIE W, YEAR 3
(ADDED 6.5.08)
Two of our whole school initiatives for the academic year 2008-2009, are to promote Outdoor Learning and to re-model the children’s learning by developing a much more creative curriculum. A creative curriculum, is topic and skills based and the topics are chosen by asking the children what they would like to learn about. Outdoor learning gives the children opportunities to develop their skills outside of the classroom, in a range of subjects. Our learning environment has already been much improved recently, through the creation of our Willow Dome, the Foundation Stage area, plus our fantastic playground art. With the further development of the Touchwood fencing this term and the possibility of an outdoor classroom structure being built in the future, our outdoor space is an exciting place to learn. To promote these two initiatives, the children in Key Stage 1 will be experiencing two outdoor learning mornings on Wednesday 4th June and Thursday 5th June. The children will be working in mixed age groups and will be participating in pond dipping, pebble painting, scare-crow making, outdoor art work and much more! We are fortunate to have a well established conservation area and pond. Mrs Dickens, one of our much valued Teaching Assistants, has worked extremely hard, over many years, creating this fantastic learning environment. There are many plant varieties, plus a good assortment of pond life for the children to study. Avon Wildlife have also worked with the children recently to create a wonderful marsh garden. These two outdoor learning mornings will be exciting and stimulating and will cover many cross-curricular skills.
OUTDOOR LEARNING
On Tuesday 29th April it was the Year 3 class Roman trip to discover real Roman objects and statues. It was to Caerleon in Wales. First we went to see Roman baths in the museum. They were very big but had no water in them. After the Roman baths we went to the gift shop. I (Oliver) bought two real Roman coins which were really cool. Finally we went outside to go to the Roman Coliseum. Miss Plews said to go and see if we could find where the people might have prayed.  Unfortunately, it started to rain just after lunch. We went into a Roman Legion museum and saw lots of Roman soldier stuff. When we got in, a man showed us around. We had to do a quiz which was very, very fun to do. Year 3 enjoyed their day in Caerleon!

OLVESTON OUT OF SCHOOL CLUB
(ADDED 6.5.08)
On Monday 28th April, Olveston children welcomed Year 3 and 4 children from Bannerman Road Primary School. In term 3, Year 4 children travelled to Bannerman Road to form friendships and take part in a range of creative activities. It was now our turn to host a visit. The coach arrived at 10.15am and the children from Bannerman Road joined us for assembly. We then had a playtime and began the first activity at 10.50am. Miss Plews lead a team building activity, Mr Bonney did a drama session and Miss West worked with children to create friend-ship tiles that will be turned into a collaborative mural. At lunchtime, the children from Bannerman Road had brought a packed lunch. The children from Olveston were looking forward to showing off the willow structures and playing on the field together. Year 4 children have created some thank you letters that will be sent to Bannerman Road. We will also be using our beautiful friendship tiles to create a mural in the new hall. OLVESTON WELCOMES BANNERMAN ROAD
On Tuesday 6th May, we will be handing over our old school hall to a team of builders. We are very ex-cited about this project, which will help transform the inside into a multi-purpose library and computer suite. The work will include re-moving the ceiling tiles to reveal a beautiful apex roof space which will give the library and computer suite an extra dimension. Work will take approximately 12 weeks. The Olveston Out of School Club will be relocating to The Wike Hall from the 6th May.
